The history of the development of microwave photonics in Russia spans several decades. During this time, scientific schools have been formed, and fundamental principles have been developed for the creation of narrow-band lasers, waveguide structures with low optical losses, and methods for integrating lasers, modulators, and photodetectors on a chip. However, despite the clear advantages of microwave photonics, such as high speed, wide bandwidth, low weight and size, and noise immunity, the systematic transition from laboratory prototypes to mass-produced products has not yet been fully achieved in Russia.
